The Platform/Servicing Engineering Team at Uplift handles the server-side systems required to post-loan creation and servicing such as customer management, back office portal, merchant including loan payments and data analytics. It involves creating and interfacing with various internal and external micro-services, queues, key-value store as well as traditional SQL databases and AWS products and services. Some of the work here is customer-facing, involving full-stack applications, but also in creating serverless applications that handle financial operations like automating payments and creating virtual credit cards.

The Sr. Manager / Director of Engineering will be spinning up a new development team in Toronto. The leader for the Toronto office will be able to respond to the challenges of having the head office out-of-country, integrating with remote teams, managing culture and quality, and acting as the technical leader for a team of 10+ developers.


  • Open, manage and technically lead a second site development office
  • Own projects that operate cross-functionally with multiple engineering team
  • Manage the overall planning, execution, and success of complex technical projects
  • Spend a portion of your time on code and architecture
  • Design expressive and friendly APIs for our partners
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to a team of 10+ engineers


  • 10+ years of software engineering experience
  • BA/BS degree in Engineering, CS, or equivalent, Master's degree a plus
  • Prior engineering team leadership in a hyper growth software development company
  • Prior experience recruiting, training, motivating, retaining senior engineers
  • Ability to take technical ownership of highly critical engineering projects
  • Demonstrated success in technical leadership
  • Strong communication skills -- verbal and written
  • Be approachable and articulate
  • Lead by example
  • Have built cloud based infrastructure with REST interfaces using AWS or equivalent
  • Develop API endpoints, application servers and lambdas (Java, Python, Clojure) that connect with various AWS services, external APIs and data stores (Dynamo, PostgreSQL)
  • Experience with microservices environment
  • Proficient in modern programming (Java, Clojure, Python, or equivalent)
  • Always thinking about how to automate, has experience to demonstrate automation
  • Experience in scalability - data growth, execution time and resilience of services
  • Entrepreneurial, persistent, with the desire to go deep into the details
  • Comfortable working in a startup culture with the ability to earn trust
