The 1997-98 Winter Playoffs

Opponent:
Polar Stars

Playoff Game 3: The first period started out a very tight period, with the Ice Hawks getting stuck in their own zone about 3 times... At 6:35 of the first period the Polar Stars were able to capitalize on a defensive breakdown. At the first intermission the Ice Hawks had a quick pep talk, knowing that we still had a chance to take this game only being 1 goal behind. So 9 seconds into the second period, KUCERA (ARSENAULT) was able to slap one in to make it a 1-1 game. Both teams continued to battle closely, the Ice Hawks knew that they needed the win not the tie. As time went by in the third period the Ice Hawks seemed to have chances, but still they were unable to get one in the net. Then with just 30 seconds left in the third period, the Polar Stars were able to over power the Ice Hawks and score their second of the game. Right from the face off the Ice Hawks had to pull their goalie and put 6 men out on the ice... That was it, the season was over... The Ice Hawks were eliminated and were unable to advance to the finals for the first time in their team history... See you all next season!

Opponent:
Blizzard
2-3 Loss

Playoff Game 2: The tension was high as we faced the Blizzard in Playoff Game #2..... The first period was a pretty tight with both teams playing a close game at both ends of the ice. Then something snapped, as KOPP #3 launched a sweet shot into the top left hand corner of the Blizzard's goal, off of a screened drop pass from KUCERA (3:24 1st period). After that, it was a shooting frenzy from both teams with us at the head of the pack. Still, the Blizzard managed to tie it up in the 2nd. Sloppy playing allowed the Blizzard to slip one in past WILLHIDE just 39 seconds into the 3rd period to make the game 2-1... Then as the intensity rose, the refs decided to call two very marginal penalties on us that let the Blizzard take advantage of a 5 on 3 power play. They won the face off, fired one in as WILLHIDE dove to attempt the save and pocketed their third goal of the game. At 7:13 of the 3rd, KUCERA scored off a pass from WILLHIDE and brought the game back to a one goal difference... At the 1:00 mark we pulled our goalie to make it a 6-5 situation and with just seconds left in the game, YOUNG slapped in a "last chance shot" that went wide past the net just as the buzzer went off.
Opponent:
Polar Stars
4-1 Win
Playoff Game 1: The Ice Hawks took the Polar Stars by surprise, when KUCERA slammed in an unassisted PPG five hole shot early in the first. (Some say they saw James assist on his own goal...) To say the least, it was downhill from there for the Polar Stars. They had trouble getting the puck out of their zone and the Ice Hawks profited from it with two more goals at 8:18 of the 1st period LANGDON (ARSENUALT,KOWALCZYK) and 5:04 KUCERA (YOUNG, KOPP) for a SH goal. Frequent turnovers in the neutral and the PS zone gave the Ice Hawks twice as many shots on goal and made for some really nice plays. Then in the 2nd period at 1:54 ARSENAULT (KUCERA, WILLHIDE teamed up for a goal. But after a messy 2nd period resulting in some nasty penalties (3 for IH, 5 for PS),the Polar Stars started to wake up from their trance in the 3rd and managed to slip one in past WILLHIDE off an undocumented assist from their goalie.

Opponent:
Mounties
6-1 Win

Game 20:Ice Hawks win! Summary soon to come.

Opponent:
Rockets
2-3 Loss

Game 19:Ice Hawks did not show until the 3rd period.... and by then it was too late. Summary soon to come.

Opponent:
Snipers
7-4 Win

Game 18:Not even close this time... if it wasn't for our sloppy play in the third period we would of had a 7-1 game...

Opponent:
The Edge
3-3 Tie

Game 17: The Ice Hawks started this one off in the HOLE! The Edge scored first from a rebound in front of the net, taking advantage of a defensive breakdown (Mr. KOPP! @#%$)... The Ice Hawks were slow and disorganized throughout the entire first period. Soon the Edge scored another goal with a shot that squeezed its way into the net. The Edge started to Cherry-Pick on every chance they got. Scoring their third goal to lead 3-0, halfway into the second period. Everyone on the bench said, "Hey let's put our secret weapon line out there!" With KOWALCZYK leading the secret weapon line, he scored his FIRST EVER Short Handed, Unassisted Goal! Within seconds of that goal, KOWALCZYK (ANDERSON, PEKAREK) added another goal making it a 2-3 game! The Ice Hawks then stepped up their play! Along with the Goalie MASUKAWA, who made an excellent save on the penalty shot... What a dumb call... Well soon we were in the third, when our secret weapon line was on the door steps of the Edge. ANDERSON was able to knock in an unassisted goal to tie up the game. With 30 seconds left KUCERA had one last chance to break the tie and he shot the puck bouncing it over the net off of the goalie's mask. The score ended a 3-3 tie after 5 minutes of overtime.

Opponent:
Blizzard
2-4 Loss

Game 16: Summary soon to come...

Opponent:
Rockets
4-2 Win

Game 15: The Rockets started this one off really strong. The first period the Rockets were able to score a PPG, after Hank took an interference call. The Rockets held their ground until the second... When the Ice Hawks were able to score three goals by YOUNG ( KOWALCZYK), DEMARQUEZ (CROSTHWAITE) and ANDERSON (ARAKAKI, YOUNG) ealy in the second period. The rockets were slowing down as they where short on the lines... The Ice Hawks then went on to out shoot the Rockets 46-25... The final Ice Hawks goal KUCERA (ARSENAULT) sealed up this victory. As the Ice Hawks easliy defeted the Rockets for the first time this season.

Opponent:
Polar Stars
1-2 Loss

Game 14: "1st Shot and Last Shot Game!" Well we had our second showing at the San Jose Arena, and again we met the Polar Stars. We had a great pregame skate and we were ready to kick some butt! The puck was dropped and we started the game... Seconds into the game we got a penalty, not a good way to start off... especially since the Polar Stars were able to convert on their first shot of the game for a power play goal as soon as they entered our zone. The Ice Hawks had to take a second to think about what just happened. There would be no more scoring until the third period, when YOUNG (KUCERA, ARSENAULT) was able to tie the game up with a slapshot from the point. The rest of the game was very close on both sides of the ice, with both goalies making some great saves. Then with 31 seconds left, the Ice Hawks defence let the Polar Stars shoot the puck one more time and yes it was a goal. The Ice Hawks lose... I think both teams set attendance records for the game. We must have had over 100 fans out there! Thanks to our FANS!

Opponent:
Mounties
4-2 Win

Game 13: The "Immaculate Break Away Goal" by Hank Ross... ! Cry's from the bench and our faithful fans, "WOW I WISH I HAD THAT GOAL ON VIDEO!" Well, this game was closer then we had wanted it to be. This was our first meeting ever and it seemed like the rivalry started before the first drop of the puck. The 1st period was a close one, with the Mounties leading off by scoring at 7:33. The Ice Hawks just could not seem to get the puck set up in the Mounties zone. When finally at 2:16 in the 1st, YOUNG (unassisted) took the puck from behind our net and skated it across the whole ice, through everyone, and took it to their net unassisted for our first goal tying it up at 1. The Ice Hawks had to get their act together, so we called a time out to talk it over! Our forwards needed to be more aggressive and our time out pep talk paid off with the Ice Hawks scoring again less then a minute later, ARSENAULT (LANGDON, KOPP). ROSS (unassisted) led the 2nd period off, with a unforgettable GAME WINNING BREAK AWAY goal. He won the puck from a Mountie at center ice and skated right towards the Mountie crease fighting off two Mounties(falling to the ice) on the way, then once entering the crease he deaked the goalie for the "IMMACULATE BREAK AWAY GOAL!", and yes I heard someone say, "I wish I had that on video!" The Bench opened up with cheer! The Mounties then rallied back with a goal to make it a 3-2 game. Towards the end of the 2nd, KUCERA (LANGDON, KOPP) put our final goal in the net. The 3rd period was scoreless while WILLHIDE kept us in the game as we were out shot 29 to 28 for the game.

Opponent:
Blizzard
4-3 Win/OT

Game 12: The tension mounted as it became apparent that the first period might be scoreless. We played our best, determined to stand up to the Blizzard as they tried to white us out. The first goal in the game from the Blizzard in the middle of the first was the one that broke the camels back. Penalties were handed out like candy as the Blizzard tried everything they could to get another goal. Well, it didn't work (2nd period goal - Arsenault) because after some pushing, shoving and shuffeling around (3rd period goal - Arsenault) we managed to tie them late in the third (GTG - Young) after we pulled our goalie! In OT we kept great control of the puck and won our first game against the Blizzard this season (GWG - Kucera) 4-3!!!

Opponent:
Wolverines
2-3 Loss/OT

Game 11:This was a close game! We outshot the Wolverines 21 to 16, but after a 2-2 tie that held up through the third, we fell apart in overtime allowing the Woverines an unassisted breakaway GWG. Ice Hawks scoring: Kucera (DeMarquez), Willhide (unassisted)

Opponent:
Snipers
5-3 Win

Game 10:Another close game with the Snipers! We played even all the way up until the third period, where we wore on the Snipers until they broke, and gave up 3 goals in the third, for our 5-3 game winner.

Opponent:
Snipers
3-2 Win

Game 9:Lucky for us, KOPP #3 brought his goalie gear and saved us from yet another round of "Where's our goalie" (see game #5)... The 1st period was pretty tight. We were both scoreless and penalized until the Snipers popped in a high one over KOPP's blocker-side shoulder pad. But soon after Steve A. won the face off to Katie, who showed them who was boss with a shot from the point tipped in by KUCERA (ARSENAULT, JOYNT). At the end of the first it was a 1 - 1 tie. The second period started off with a goalie switch and the Snipers scoring their second goal early. The Hawks had to settle down, we went on the power play, and PEKAREK (KOWALCZYK, YOUNG) scored our FIRST power play goal of the season! At the 5 min mark of the second YOUNG (KOWALCZYK) scored his 1st goal of the season and the game winner! The third period was pretty skittish. We had plenty of close calls (and some luck,) but despite ourselves, managed to beat the Snipers 3-2.

Opponent:
The Rockets
3-5 Loss

Game 8:It was a sad sight. We ignored our goalie's warnings and played sloppy anyway. We needed a win this time but I guess we didn't want it bad enough. Blind passes, passes up the middle, forwards (defensive zone) in too deep....you name it , we did it. The Rockets benefited from our mistakes, pocketing 2 goals (one short handed!) in the first . Luckily we came back to tie them with both GIBSON (KUCERA) and PEKAREK (LAGEMANN, ANDERSON) scoring in the second, making it 2-2. Then PEKAREK (ANDERSON) shot the GAG (Go Ahead Goal) early in the 3rd and we thought we had it made until our sloppy playing preceeded us again. This resulted in the Rocket's landing a PPG and along with 2 more goals later in the 3rd changing the score to a 5-3 Rockets win. WAAH! Hopefully this game will open our eyes and we'll be seeing more people at our Sunday "early bird" practice....... BTW: Thanks to Kopp #3 for filling in for our goalie for those first 6+ mins..... he made some great saves!

Opponent:
Polar Stars
3-0 Win

Game 7: It has been a while since the Ice Hawks played a game on PROFESSIONAL ICE! One night we decided to play against the Polar Stars, the number one team in our division, at the post-Shark's game at the Arena . We had never played with them before but after visiting their website and seeing their winning record, we knew that they be a tough team to beat.... (we were only in our seventh game after moving up from a lower level.) Lucky for us, the Polar Stars defense knew this and figuring that they had already beat us, decided to drink beer and relax during the Shark's game. On the ice, it was a different story. First period was scoreless with everybody skating around and taking shots here and there. There were some close calls, but it didn't snap until the second period, when the sick reality set into the PS defense that beer-related energy doesn't last three periods, especially when the motor skills are impaired...(IH 8:29 14/22 and 7:30 19/53). After the Ice Hawks scored the second goal, the Polar Stars surrendered in the 3rd (IH 4:58 30/19) and played out the rest of the game with heavy hearts. Well the Ice Hawks looked like pro's at least! We had an excellent game with both team playing a very close game. Thanks also to WILLHIDE who kept us in the game as he earned his first shutout of the season! Great Job Ice Hawks!

Opponent:
Blizzard
2-2 Tie

Game 6:The Ice Hawks had a few lucky breaks when the Blizzard could not convert on their first period chances. We were plagued with 2 minute+ shifts in the first period, where both teams were unable to put one in the net. The second seemed to continue to be a close match, with 2:59 left in the second, the Blizzard finally scored. But Kucera (Crosthwaite) were quick to even it up at the 2:27 mark of the second. The third period was a tough one, the Blizzard were determined to add to their score and with 23 seconds left in the third, the Blizzard had scored the go ahead goal. The Ice Hawks, were stunned... Quick thinking Crosthwaite called for a timeout. The team caught their breath, pulled Willhide from the net, and added our 6th skater. The Ice Hawks won the face off and got the puck quickly into the Blizzard zone. With all six skaters in the zone, Langdon won the puck off the far boards and sent it to the net, where Arsenault redirected the puck in the net with 2.9 seconds left in the third! The Ice Hawks bench erupted with joy! The Blizzard had out shot the Ice Hawks in each of the first three periods. Now to Overtime! Well again the Ice Hawks started off the OT going towards the Blizzard zone, again OT looked like the previous three periods. Very closely matched, until the 1:00 minute mark where the Ice Hawks took a penalty and again at the 22 second mark, from then on the Ice Hawks were short handed, the Blizzard had two scoring chances but Willhide stood his ground! It ended in a 2-2 tie.

Opponent:
The Rockets
9-4 Loss

Game 5:The Ice Hawks out shot & out played the Rockets, but when you have no goalie, usually you lose! 'nuf said. Ice Hawks Scoring: Crothswaite (Kucrea), Joynt (Arakaki, Crothswaite), Arsenault Unassisted, Arsenault (Kucrea, Gibson)

Opponent:
The Edge
3-1 Loss

Game 4:Skating at Eastridge can be rough, but skating there with no ice cut can be pretty bad. So off we went to face the Edge at Eastridge with no Zamboni ice cut. Kucera shot one in early in the first with assists from Dvorak and DeMarquez, but it was not enough. Our penalties preceeded us as we watched the Edge gain two PPG's in the second and a goal in the third, beating us 3-1.

Opponent:
Snipers
5-2 Win

Game 3:Another fun game thanks to the Snipers! It started out good (for us) with 2 shots early in the first (12:51 30/3/19 and 12:06 9/18/25) putting us ahead 2-0 until later, DEMARQUEZ scored a sweet goal off an assist from KOPP, pushing us up 3-0. It looked as if it would be a clean sweep, but the Snipers didn't see it that way. They chose second period to be their come back....come back and sit in the box, that is. The Snipers racked up 6 penalties, a game misconduct and managed to score two goals. We didn't get off so easy, as YOUNG added another game misconduct to his record and battled it out with #111 on the ice. The Snipers still weren't finished with us yet and hacked away through the 3rd (5 more penalties including another game misconduct) despite being outshot and outscored (10:47 14/18 and 8:19 19/6/30) by the game winning Ice Hawks.

Opponent:
Blizzard
4-3 Loss

Game 2:The Ice Hawks met the Blizzard again. The Blizzard started the 1st period with two goals, while the Ice Hawks only had 3 shots in the first period and were unable to score. Then finally LANGDON (PEKAREK assisting) put one past the goalie at the 6 miniute mark of the 2nd period. But the Blizzard scored just 2 miniutes later to make it a 3-1 game to end the 2nd period. KUCERA (DVORAK) made it a 3-2 game early in the 3rd. Then with 4:44 left the Blizzard struck again making it 4-2, but the Ice Hawks kept to it, and soon after, KUCERA (ANDERSON) brought the Ice Hawks closer, but for this game it was not close enough. After pulling the goalie late in the third, the game ended in a loss for the Ice Hawks. [ 3 Stars - WALKER(Blzd) - 3 assists, KUCERA - 2 goals, WILLHIDE - great saves! ]

Opponent:
Wolverines
5-1 Win

Game 1:Welcome to PHA Conference D! We started off early with a goal from Kowalczyk from a pass form Gibson. We lead 1 to nothing in the first period. In the second period we added two more goals, from Crosthwaite and KUCERA. KUCERA assisted on Crosthwaite's goal and was unassisted on his goal. At the start of the 3rd period GIBSON scored from an assist by Masukawa, we had a 4-0 lead. Frustrated by the score the Wolverines finally put one on the board. Near the end of the game LANGDON scored a short handed goal from an assist by Kopp.
