Hawks Held Up By Outlaws 5-2
In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Ice Hawks could almost
feel a victory in their grasp. Almost. Leading 2-1 with less than 5 minutes left in the second period,
the Ice Hawks suffered a defensive lapse that allowed the Outlaws to score twice in the space of two
minutes. After taking the lead, the visitors added two goals in the third period to put the game out
of reach for the tiring Hawks.
Despite the loss, the Hawks showed signs of breaking out of their offensive doldrums.
22 Arsenault netted a power-play goal late in the first
period to pull the Hawks back into a tie. In the second period,
19 DeMarquez scored off a nice pass from 13 Sands to give
the Hawks their first (and only) lead of the game. The Hawks also showed effectiveness in penalty
killing, shutting down 4 of the 5 Outlaw advantages. Twice, the ever-persistent
19 DeMarquez was denied on short-handed breakaways.
The Hawks finally pulled the sticks out, launching a season-high 29 shots on goal.
With numerous chances in the defensive zone, the team could have easily scored 5 or 6 goals.
Bad boy 9 Arakaki continued to pile up
penalty minutes, adding another 6 minutes in cross-checking offenses. The new Hawk players continued
to show improvement but a lack of stamina hurt the team in the latter part of the game. In the three
league games to date, the Hawks have been outscored in the final period by a margin of 8-0! That's in
stark contrast to the first two periods in which the margin has been 8-4 against the Hawks.
